Sadiq Khan’s new expanded Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) launches from Monday with drivers set to be charged £12.50 per day extra on top of existing Congestion Charges. However, Transport For London warns failure to pay the charge will see drivers fined £160 for breaking the rules.

Former UKIP London Assembly member and Heritage Party spokesperson David Kurten warned “some people aren’t going to know” about the new charges and will be caught out.

He said some residents could get a ticket for “every day they don’t know” about the new scheme.

He warned some could end up receiving “£800 in fines” between Monday to Friday and has called for an urgent “grace period”.

He said introducing fines straight away would be really “unfair” and could “catch out a lot of unfortunate people”.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “Not everybody watches the television, let alone look at the London.Gov website or Twitter,

“These people think everybody follows them on Twitter, they don’t.

“How many people follow Sadiq Khan on Twitter, maybe five percent of Londoners, 95 percent don’t bother.

“You’ve got a huge amount to do to get the message out and some people just aren’t going to know.

“It’s not going to be a £12.50 charge because if they don’t know it’s going to get a £160 fine through the door.

“That’s just for one day, then they are going to get one every day that they don’t know about it.

“They could go on for five days, Monday to Friday and end up with £800 in fines and they are going to be going ‘what on earth is going on here’.

“You can imagine that happening to a lot of really poor unfortunate people.
