Gallery: Bottas Converts F1 Pole to Win in a Damp Turkey

For once, it was Valtteri Bottas’ time to shine. The Mercedes driver turned the pole he was gifted from Saturday into his 10th win of his career Sunday with a dominate drive in the Formula 1 Turkish Grand Prix.

Bottas inherited his pole from his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton who won the top spot in qualifying but started 11th thanks to his 10-place engine penalty.

The track was damp due to overnight showers, and though there was no heavy rain when the sun came up a persistent mist kept the surface from drying keeping the field on intermediate tires. After the starting 11th, by Lap 11, Hamilton was up into the top five after passing Pierre Gasly. Hamilton moved to fourth when Sergio Perez pitted on Lap 38.

Perez pitted during a round of stops that began on Lap 35. Championship contender Max Verstappen who started second, pitted on Lap 37 from P2, and Bottas pitting from the lead one lap later.

After Charles Leclerc’s stop on lap 48 put Hamilton into third, Hamilton wanted to try and make it to the end on the tires he started on or at least make it to dry conditions. The team ordered him in however and despite his protests pitted on lap 51.

After the stop, Hamilton expressed his anger over the team radio asking, “Why did we give up that place?” Hamilton would finish fifth. Sergio Perez was third sharing the podium with Verstappen who increased his points lead over Hamilton.

Bottas also nabbed a point with running the fastest lap.
