You’ll Never Guess Rookie Yuki Tsunoda’s Favorite Thing About F1

AlphaTauri Formula 1 rookie Yuki Tsunoda is like a kid in the candy store this season.

The Japanese driver is fast making a name for himself in Formula 1 as the only rookie to score points so far in a 2021 F1 class that also includes Haas F1 Team tandem Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. Tsunoda finished ninth in his F1 debut at Bahrain this season at Bahrain.

This past weekend, engine troubles sidelined Tsunoda early.

But it was still likely a good weekend for the 20-year-old driver (he turns 21 on May 11). Tsunodo, along with several other drivers, was asked during weekend press conferences about his favorite thing about being an F1 driver.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen spoke the company line and represented just about the entire grid in his response to the question.

“Driving the car,” Verstappen said. “The speed, braking, power. That’s the best thing about being a Formula 1 driver because outside the car, it’s not very nice. I prefer to be driving the car 24-7 than doing all these things.”

So much for his love of media obligations.

Then there’s Tsunoda. Still a little wide-eyed about the whole F1 experience, Tsunoda hedged his bet on the fast car thing and offered a two-fer.

“The best thing about Formula is driving the fastest car in the world, I think,” Tsunoda said. “Others, I also like to eat good food in hospitality every week. I like that. I really like the food and the hospitality. I really enjoy it, every hospitality.

“For example, AlphaTauri and Honda is very different. Japanese food at Honda and Italian for Scuderia AlphaTauri, so I can enjoy those two different kinds of food in one week or one day. For me, that’s a good thing.”

And somewhere, Verstappen is still laughing and shaking his head—just as he was during the press conference.
