Lord Frost met for talks with Maros Sefcovic on Friday and warned using Article 16 is “very much on the table”. Following talks, the Prime Minister will hold a Cabinet meeting for the first time to discuss unilaterally suspending parts of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

Mujtaba Rahman, managing director for the Eurasia Group and Treasury civil servant, said: “I understand full Cabinet – chaired by Boris Johnson – will discuss Article 16 for the first time end of next week.”

Following discussions with Lord Frost, Mr Sefcovic revealed there had been little progress with his counterpart.

He said: “We hear a lot about article 16 at the moment, but there’ll be no doubt that triggering article 16 to seek the negotiation of the protocol would have serious consequences.

“Serious for Northern Ireland, as it would lead to instability and unpredictability, and serious also for the EU-UK relations in general, as it would mean a rejection of EU efforts to find a consensual solution to the implementation of the protocol.”

UK looking for solutions to Brexit deal

According to Northern Ireland Secretary, Brandon Lewis, the UK is looking for alternatives to the Northern Ireland protocol.

He also claimed triggering Article 16 is not inevitable.

He added: “We don’t want to trigger it, we want these discussions that we’re having, these negotiations with the EU right now, to be productive, to come to a conclusion.”

Boris to hold Cabinet to discuss triggering Article 16

Boris Johnson is set to chair Cabinet where he will discuss triggering Article 16 next week.

According to the managing director for the Eurasia Group, Mujtaba Rahman said: “I understand full Cabinet – chaired by Boris Johnson – will discuss Article 16 for the first time end of next week.”

Prior to talks with Maros Sefcovic on Friday, Lord Frost warned using Article 16 was “very much on the table”.

Although the EU put forward proposal to ease trade in Northern Ireland, Lord Frost warned the plan did not go far enough.

Talks will continue next week before the Cabinet meeting.

Mr Sefcovic on Friday said: “I found this disappointing and once again I urge the UK government to engage with us sincerely.

“From this perspective, I see next week as an important one.

We should focus all efforts on reaching a solution as soon as possible.”
