This afternoon the Prime Minister would only commit that he didn’t “want” to further burden taxpayers.
His eyebrow-raising comments were made as he defended breaking his manifesto pledge not to raise national insurance.
Answering questions from journalists at a Downing Street press conference, Mr Johnson said the Government had to be “pragmatic” in the current circumstances.
“The fiscal position has changed radically from the one we found ourselves in 2019,” he said.
“We have got to reasonable, we have got to be pragmatic.
“I certainly don’t want any more tax rises this parliament.”
