‘Your loss!’ Britons hit out at ‘petulant’ deal block as security disaster looms for EU

Brexit: Soubry says people’s promises ‘have not been delivered’

The uproar comes after it emerged the UK may be banned from accessing the European Union’s police and security databases after Brexit. A leaked EU report on the system, seen by this publication, suggested action should be “immediately” taken to ensure Britain can no longer access the EU Schengen Information System (SIS) after the transition period expires on December 31st.

The SIS is used within the bloc for security and border management.

But Nicolaus Fest, a German MEP, warned the bloc should carefully think about the consequences for its security ties with Britain instead of punishing the country for Brexit.

The MEP said: “By pursuing this punitive path the EU risks losing vital connections with a world leader in security.”

Readers were quick to respond to the warning for the European Union.

One Express.co.uk reader said: “We decided to leave the EU – why would we continue to have access to their security systems?

“How would you feel if they demanded access to OUR security systems?”

Another also highlighted the decision “will make the western world more dangerous for our children and their future”.

One commenter wrote: “The EU does not have a word for negotiation, only for bullying.

“Go no-deal Boris, you are wasting your time.”

Other readers pointed out the UK would not lose out to the EU because of its membership of Five Eyes.

The Five Eyes is an intelligence alliance between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The roots of the alliance can be traced all the way back to the post-World War II era as Five Eyes members used to monitor communications of the Soviet Union and the eastern bloc during the Cold War.

The alliance now concentrates on monitoring private communications worldwide and only shares its intelligence between members.

One reader said: “Five Eyes intelligence network makes the EU’s own security system look child’s play.

“Their loss if they cut us out petulantly.”

Another said: “Without the ‘5 Eyes’ intelligence, they are the losers.

“Their attitude is NOT driven by any care of their ‘Blessed EU’, it is EGO.”

It comes as Boris Johnson has travelled to Brussels to meet with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to try to clinch a Brexit agreement.
