A 10-year-old boy who was killed by a dog suffered "severe injuries to his head and neck", an inquest has heard.

Jack William Lis tragically died following the dog attack at a house in Caerphilly on Monday (November 8).

The hearing, at Newport Coroner's Court, was reportedly told that Jack was outside his house playing before going into a friend's house where he was then attacked by the animal.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the youngster was pronounced dead at around 4.15pm from "unsurvivable" injuries, Wales Online reports.

The coroner said the circumstances surrounding Jack's death were "violent and unnatural" and so formally opened an inquest into his death.

The dog was destroyed by firearms officers and no other animals were involved in the attack.

The dog was described as a "beast" by its previous owner, Lee Jenkins, who told the Mirror he has voluntarily spoken to police.

Chief Super Hobrough said that officers were not yet in a position to confirm what breed of dog the animal was but it was described as a "large and powerful dog. It was acting aggressively at the scene."

Jack's family has paid tribute to their "sweet, sweet boy".

Writing on Facebook, Emma Whitfield wrote: "With so much heartbreak and before close friends and family see his name in the news, I have to announce our beautiful boy Jack was taken so tragically yesterday.

"It was not our dog nor did it happen at our family home. He was out to play."

"We love you so much our sweet, sweet boy," she added.

The close-knit community has expressed its sorrow and offered support to the boy's family with dozens of flowers that were left at the scene.

One tribute read: “Taken way too soon. Rest in peace, little man.”

Another said: “Jack, what a handsome and well-mannered boy. Thinking of your family at this heartbreaking time. So sad, sleep tight.”

Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly, Hefin David said: "I'm sure members are aware of the tragic events that took place yesterday in Penyrheol in my constituency where a young 10-year-old boy was attacked and killed by a domestic dog.

"The boy has been named as Jack Lis and I'm sure everyone in this chamber would wish to send their condolences and best thoughts to the family and the community of Penyrheol, who undoubtedly will rally around these circumstances.

"I'd also like to say that on behalf of my fellow regional colleagues in the Conservative party and Plaid Cymru as I know we all feel the same."

The inquest was adjourned for "further inquiries" to be made. It will be resumed at a later date.
