The Distributed Gain High Energy Laser System laser will be developed by a General Atomics and Boeing partnership. The 300 kilowatt distributed gain laser will have an integrated Boeing beam director.
The last has been dubbed the US military’s “most powerful laser weapon to date”.
Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS, said: “The high power, compact laser weapon subsystem prototype that GA-EMS will deliver under this contract will produce a lethal output greater than anything fielded to date.
“This technology represents a leap-ahead capability for air and missile defense that is necessary to support the Army’s modernization efforts and defeat next-generation threats in a multi-domain battlespace.”
The statement added how the weapon could help protect soldiers against “unmatched speed, performance, safety sand affordability”.
According to PopScience, if the laser is developed it could destroy a number of objects including small drones and missiles.
General Atomic’s vice president for lasers and advanced sensors Dr Michael Perry revealed the laser is of the seventh generation design that has already been demonstrated.
He said: “The laser system employs two Gen 7 laser heads in a very compact and lightweight package.
“Recent architectural improvements have enabled our single-beam DG Lasers to achieve comparable beam quality to fiber lasers in a very simple design without the need for beam combination.”
It is believed the laser could burn through objects such as a hypersonic missile if the laser has enough time and power to do so.
Dr Perry told PopScience the 300-kilowatt laser could intercept a “wide variety of threats ranging from cruise missiles, manned aircraft, unmanned aircraft and rockets/artillery”.
Last month, China launched a hypersonic weapon capable of carrying a nuclear warhead in August that did an entire lap of Earth without being detected by US defence systems as experts warn of CCP Space domination.
The development has sparked fears of an uncontrolled arms race as China take their ambitions of global domination into Space and seriously threaten US power in doing so.

Speaking to GB News, Dr Nikolai Sokov, a former Russian diplomat who now works at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, warned the development of such a missile could change the face of global power.
He said: “The remarkable thing about that missile is the simple fact that it can approach the United States from almost any direction.
“And the most important thing it can evade early warning systems and the missile defence systems in the United States all look north.”
And in a shocking admission, he said that the USA can do “almost nothing” to stop China’s forward march into Space and its capability to attack the USA with hypersonic missiles.
Dr Sokov stressed the only thing the USA can do to protect itself is place missile deterrent systems “all-around” US-owned territories across the World.
Following news of China’s new hypersonic missile, the US’s second-highest-ranking military officer warned Beijing has completed “hundreds” of missiles while Washington has done less than 10.
He said: “What you need to be worried about is that in the last five years, or maybe longer, the United States has done nine hypersonic missile tests, and in the same time the Chinese have done hundreds.
“Single digits versus hundreds is not a good place.”
Relations between the USA and China have been tense for the past few years, with Beijing recently accusing US President Joe Biden’s administration of hostility.
