A Belgian doctor who treated several seriously ill young patients battling the coronavirus has revealed that their lung scans were "nothing short of terrifying", according to reports.
Dr Ignace Demeyer, who works at a hospital in the city of Aisle, said there has been an increase in the number of people between the ages of 30 and 50 presenting severe symptoms.
This is despite them having “blank medical records” that show no underlying conditions, the Brussels Times reported.
Demeyer told the Belgian broadcaster VRT: "They just walk in, but they are terribly affected by the virus.
"The images we took yesterday are nothing short of terrifying.
"There are people who do not smoke, who have no other conditions such as diabetes or heart failure.
Worldwide there have been more than 190,000 people infected as of Tuesday afternoon according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.
Demeyer's comments come as the death toll in the UK rose to 104 today, making the number of new daily fatalities double in the space of just 24 hours.
The number of confirmed cases in the UK today rose by almost 700, with 2,626 patients known to have been infected across the home nations.
The deceased patients were aged between 59 and 94 years old and all reportedly had underlying health conditions.
Speaking of his patients, Demeyer added: "They all have the same complaints, they have been sick for a week so they stayed at home with the flu.
