Girl, 15, ‘gang raped by 33 men’ after boyfriend blackmailed her with sex video

A 15-year-old girl was reportedly gang-raped by up to 33 men on several occasions after her boyfriend blackmailed her with a sex video.

The latest alleged shocking sex attacks in India took place at various location in the Thane district of Maharashtra over the last eight months according to a senior official.

Police have arrested 24 people and detained two minors in connection with the case so far, Dattatray Karale, additional commission of police (East region), said.

The victim is said to be in a stable condition and undergoing treatment at a government hospital.

The Times of India reported that angry crowds had gathered outside the police station where the men were being held.

Police in the city of Dombivli, near Mumbai, registered a case on Wednesday against 33 people. The crimes include rape, repeated rape, gang-rape and rape of a minor according to Karale.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place between January 29 and September 22 of this year.

Karale said: "It all started when the lover of the girl raped her in January and made a video of the incident. He started blackmailing her on the basis of that video.

"Later on, his friends and acquaintances gang-raped her at least on four to five occasions at different places, including Dombivli, Badlapur, Murbad and Rabale in the district.

"The victim has named 33 persons. Out of them, 24 persons have been arrested and two minors detained in this connection. The girl's condition is said to be stable."

Police are searching for further suspects while those already arrested will be remanded in custody until Wednesday, September 29.

The two minor's will be remanded in custody at a children's remand home.

India's rape laws were overhauled after an infamous 2012 gang rape in New Delhi that shocked the world.

Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, was beaten, tortured and gang-raped as she travelled on a private bus with a male friend who was also badly beaten.

She died in hospital almost two weeks later and four men were executed for the crime in March 2020.

Despite this the number of offences remain high, with more than 28,000 rapes reported last year.

The actual number if likely far higher with many going unreported due to the social stigma attached and lack of faith in the authorities.
