A gunman has 'been shot by police' and at least two officers have been struck by gunfire during an incident in Houston, Texas.

Houston Police SWAT teams raced down to the scene to 2600 Holly Hall today in response to a gunman, (Tuesday, October 20).

A call came in at around 9.30am near the Highway 288.

Officers say the suspect is in custody and currently on the way to the hospital.

Chief Art Acevedo has asked for prayers for both the officers and their families in his latest tweet on social media.

One of the officers was shot in the arm and is expected to survive the injuries, reports state.

The incident took place at an apartment complex, with reports that officers still have the complex surrounded.

Initially, police reported that at least one officer had been shot but it has now been confirmed two cops have been struck by gunfire.

An ambulance at the scene was seen rushing to the hospital, reports ABC news.

There is also a large police presence outside Memorial Hermann Hospital, where at least one officer is being treated for injuries.

It is not yet known why the officers were at the complex, but police reported the suspect barricaded themselves during the incident.

Before the suspect's arrest, cops warned locals to avoid the area.

Houston Police tweeted: "This remains an active scene. SWAT is en route to a possible barricaded suspect. Please continue to avoid area."

It is unclear how the suspect was injured, but reports suggest he was shot during the incident. The suspect has been taken to Ben Taub Hospital.

The news comes just days after Houston Fire Department Arson Investigator, Lemeul Bruce, was shot and killed while doing surveillance in the Heights area.

At the time, Chief Acevedo tweeted: "The collective hearts of all of us at Houston Police goes out to Houston Fire Arson Investigator Lemeul Bruce, his family, his colleagues and his friend.

"Our hearts are broken for our friends. We will be with the Bruce Family and HFD every step of his journey to Eternal rest. RIP."
