Kate Middleton was left distraught over secret leak on her wedding day

When Kate Middleton and Prince William announced their engagement in 2010, it was met with a wave of excitement from loyal royal fans all across the world.

William proposed with his late mother's spectacular sapphire engagement ring while the couple shared a holiday in Kenya.

The Duchess of Cambridge claims "it was a total shock when it came."

While William added: "As every guy out there will know, it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going.

"So I was planning it and then it just felt really right out in Africa. It was beautiful.”

Months of intense planning followed for their big exciting day, as they knew the eyes of the world would all be watching.

The biggest decision turned out to be the venue, Westminster Abbey, which was followed closely behind by who would design Kate's dress.

Kate was desperate to keep what she would be sporting under wraps but shockingly the designer of the gown was leaked.

Sarah Burton, creative director of fashion house Alexander McQueen, was named in the media as the designer behind the stunning dress.

Kate was reportedly left distraught despite Burton denying being involved until she was officially announced as the designer when Kate arrived at Westminster Abbey.

Speaking on Channel 5 documentary Secrets of the Royal Dressmakers, royal expert Katie Nicholl discussed how much this upset the Duchess.

She said: "Behind the scenes I think that caused tears at the Palace because Kate had done everything she could to keep the wedding dress a secret."

At the time, The Sunday Times reported: "A fashion source said that the dress will be a combination of Middleton's own design ideas and Burton's deep knowledge and understanding of high fashion."

Fans across the globe tuned in to watch the stunning bride wearing an ivory gown with satin bodice, lace sleeves, and a 2.7m train.

And the fact the designer had been revealed in advance did not end up ruining Kate’s big moment.

Wedding dress creator Caroline Castingliano said: “Everybody loved Kate’s dress.

“That excitement when she stepped out, it was just ‘wow’.

"Incredible. She looked sensational."
