Lonely dog waiting seven years for adoption begs for ‘second chance’

A lonely dog sparked an outpouring of heartfelt messages after it was pictured at a shelter on Facebook.

Ginger the Labrador has been waiting for adoption for seven years.

She was first brought into the home after being rescued from an abusive situation.

The image shared on social media showed the pooch in her kennel at the Dogwood Animal Shelter in Missouri.

A message on the kennel read: "Hi. I’m Ginger.

"I’ve been here waiting 7 years, 9 months, 2 weeks, 2 days. I’m a good girl! I promise! I just need a 2nd chance.”

Her experiences from being abused left her with "medical, emotional and behavioural issues which left her unadoptable for quite some time", according to the shelter.

Thankfully, the dog has since received 30 applications since the story was posted, from people left heartbroken by the dog's situation, reports KSDK.

Although she has completed training, adoption has been challenging because she needs to be the only pet at home with no small children.

A Facebook post later said: “Thank you for the outpouring of concern about Ginger.

“Long term residency for animals in a true no-kill shelter is a problem not unique to Dogwood Animal Shelter.

"The fact that she would be best placed in a home with no other animals or small children has narrowed the possibilities, but we never give up trying."
