Man, 18, shoots his sister dead, 19, in horrific accident while showing off gun

An investigation has been launched after a brother accidentally shot his sister dead while showing off his gun.

The man, 18, had been showing the gun to his sister when it went off, hitting her in the neck, in north Houston.

Laura Natalya Rodriguez, 19, has been identified as the victim, after cops rushed to the scene at about 1pm.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to ABC 13.

Another elder sibling at home attempted CPR and called emergency services when the incident took place.

Houston Police Department Sgt. Matthew Brady said: "It's a tragic situation for the entire family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Laura had been studying at Syracuse University as a senior, however had been at home due to the pandemic.

After her shocking death, her family said her "favourite place to be was Disney World' and that she "loved to laugh and have fun."

At the time of the shooting, Houston Police tweeted: "Our homicide detectives are on the scene of a deceased woman in a residence in the 100 block of Wellington St. in north Houston.

"Officers were called at about 1pm. Prelim info is the female was shot as other family members were inside the home.

"No other info at this time."

A GoFundMe page has been launched by Laura's family to help pay for funeral costs, it has raised $17,150 and had a target of $10,000.

A tribute on the page reads: "Laura "Natalya", known to family, has moved on to be with our maker.

"It seems that the best ones are needed in heaven.

"Age 19, Senior at Syracuse University, lived abroad in Madrid for her first semester, traveled around Italy, embraced the world with open arms.

"Her favourite place to be was Disney World. Loved to laugh and have fun. No one is ever prepared, so close to Christmas, we are asking for your help for funeral arrangements and services.

"All help is greatly appreciated. God bless you."
