Meghan and Harry’s exit made life ‘simpler’ for Will and Kate, documentary says

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made life easier for Prince William and Kate Middleton by stepping down, according to a royal expert in a new documentary.

New ITV documentary The Day Will and Kate Got Married, which airs Wednesday (April 7) at 9pm, looks back at the wedding day of the future king and queen who are celebrating their 10-year anniversary this month.

It also explores the changes brought about by Harry and Meghan.

Katie Nicholl, the author of When Harry Met Meghan, said in the documentary that meeting Meghan was a turning point for Harry, who had been a bit of a third wheel.

She said: "William and Harry, for many years, had an incredibly close relationship, this unbreakable bond between two brothers who lost their mother.

"But when Harry met The One, he couldn’t live in the shadow of the Cambridges for any longer."

The Sussexes tied the knot on May 19 in 2018 and, for a while, things seemed to be going ok.

But after rumours of a Royal Family rift and growing tensions between the Cambridges and Sussexes, Harry and Meghan sensationally announced they were leaving the UK and stepping down in January 2020.

According to historian Robert Lacey, who wrote a biography of Elizabeth II, this has actually benefitted William and Kate enormously and helped boost their public image.

Speaking in the documentary, he said: "The conflict between William and Harry will be resolved one way or another.

"In a sense, life for William and Catherine became more simple when Harry and Meghan walked out of the picture and there was no competition anymore or confusion about who were the star couple.

"The challenge of that is that they are now the star couple – and the only couple."

Meanwhile, another royal commentator has predicted that Meghan and Harry will become "more irrelevant" as William's heir Prince George grows up and starts to step into the limelight.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton said: "Meghan can look as pretty as all hell but she’s still the one who will have to curtsey to Kate Middleton."
