Meghan Markle is said to have realised she faced stiff publicity competition from Kate Middleton while the pair attended a crucial royal engagement.

But the realisation for the Duchess of Sussex is said to have hit home while she and other members of the Royal Family attended a social engagement.

The Duchess of Cambridge is said to have lapped up publicity with ease and cemented herself in the spotlight, which is when Meghan is said to have realised the "unequal struggle for attention" with her royal rival.

A royal expert has since commented and said the event made Meghan Markle finally realise the publicity struggle between the family.

Expert Tom Bower wrote in his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors that a G7 summit attended by the Royal Family had made Meghan realise.

Bower claimed that when "Kate was filmed laughing with Jill Biden," Meghan had began to "understand the unequal struggle for attention".

The royal expert continued, saying that the public perceived William and Kate as the future of the monarchy, and that the Windsors "felt reassured by the international accolades".

This, Bower alleged, is when the Sussexes "plotted their counter-attack" against the Windsors and other members of the Royal Family.

A "carefully scheduled" setlist of public appearances following the G7 appearance for Meghan was allegedly in retaliation to that moment of unequal struggle.

The scheduled series of events are said to have been in preparation for a New York event that would "consolidate" the Sussexes' status in the United States.

But the scheduling conflict between the two led to a bitter moment for Prince Harry, whose presence at the unveiling of a bronze memorial for Princess Diana became a "sideshow," Bower claims.

He added of the unveiling: "In the bitterness sparked by the Sussexes, only the Spencer family were present alongside the brothers."

Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors is on sale from today (July 21).
