Melania Trump mocked for auctioning off her hat with huge minimum bid of £175k

Melania Trump has been mocked for attempting to auction one of her hats for £175,000 ($250,000).

The former First Lady of the United States wore the hate during a state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte on April 24, 2018.

The 51-year-old is also selling a painting of her in the hat, as well as a digital portrait, known as an NFT, of the artwork of her in the hat.

Bidding starts on January 11, with all items being signed by the wife of former US President Donald Trump.

A spokesman for Melania said: “The Head of State Collection commemorates the Trump Administration’s first official state visit and features three important one-of-a-kind signed items.

“Following the traditional arrival ceremony, Mrs Trump and Mrs Macron visited the National Gallery of Art and attended a joint press conference in the White House.

“Mrs Trump wore the iconic broad-brimmed, one-of-a-kind hat and an asymmetrical Michael Kors suit to the day's events.

“Later that evening, Mrs Trump and President Trump hosted their first state dinner at the White House.”

The items can also be bought using cryptocurrency known as Solana, which is a bandwagon that has been jumped on by Melania over the last 12 months.

The spokesman added: “With a nod to French culture, Mrs Trump commissioned French American designer, Hervé Pierre, to create the one-of-a-kind white hat.

“Mr Pierre used the same fabric as Mrs Trump’s white Michael Kors suit and constructed the piece in New York City.”

A portion of the money raised will go to a foster children fund – but no details as to what percentage will actually go to the charity were given.

Twitter users were quick to ridicule the auction, with some suggesting the Trumps are in "serious financial trouble".

Diane Bernaerts wrote: “Iconic? I don't even remember what that hat looked like! Do you know what's iconic? Jackie Kennedy's pink suit. But SHE didn't sell that.”

And @Trumpnado2016 added: “Melanie is selling off her clothes now. They must be in some serious financial trouble.”

@Rapidcleanings1 asked an interesting question of the former First Lady.

The said:” Doesn't the watercolour belong to the people of America, since it was a gift from the French?

“How much other stuff did they steal from the WH when they were evicted?”
