A nurse has lost her job after mocking a baby born with a birth defect on social media.
Sierra Samuels had worked as a neonatal intensive care nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, since 2016, but was recently sacked following the scandal.
According to CBS4, Samuels was first put on administrative leave last month while an investigation took place into the allegations that there was a “disturbing” invasion of privacy.
The nurse was accused of posting two graphic pictures of the baby on her Facebook story, with the first captioned, “My night was going great then boom!” and the other reading, “Your intestines posed to be inside not outside baby”, followed by the hashtag gastroschisis.
Gastroschisis is a birth defect affecting one’s belly, where the baby’s intestines are exposed.
A statement from a Jackson Health System representative read: “Employees who violate these privacy rules, despite being educated, are subject to disciplinary action including suspension or termination.

“As soon as we learned of this potential breach, we immediately placed this employee under administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Miami litigation attorney, David Weinstein, said there is a certain expectation of privacy if you’re in a private area, especially in a hospital.
He said: “With images, you have a certain expectation of privacy that if you’re in an area that you believe to be private and in this case a hospital, even more so.”
