Pakistans sex toy black market is booming as locals risk jail to buy butt plugs

A sex toy black market has emerged in Pakistan where locals are risking jail to buy steel butt plugs and dildos.

The business is booming where most of the world's leather footballs are made.

Sex toys and fetish gear are outlawed under the country's archaic laws on making or selling “obscene material and objects”.

But manufacturers are getting around the bans by selling kinky toys online with better pay tempting workers to go underground.

Businesses told VICE their so-called "surgical products" now face huge demand from kinky customers in Pakistan and across the world.

Buying, selling, advertising or manufacturing of sex toys is punishable by a fine and a jail term of three months or more in Pakistan.

Despite this, Ehtisham Qamar told of how he was in college when he and his pals decided to set up a small business making and exporting steel butt plugs in their home town of Sialkot.

He said: “We arrived in this industry relatively early and quickly started making good money.

“We never could have imagined that this type of work could take place in Sialkot.

“We used to do this work very secretively. If you ask most manufacturers they say they produce surgical products.”

Sialkot city is now where most sex toy manufacturing takes place.

It is known to produce and export steel surgical instruments and is the world’s leading manufacturer of leather footballs.

But its leather and steel production expertise has seen it become an underground exporter and online seller of steel sex toys and leather fetish gear to consumers in the US, Australia and the UK.

Talking about sex in taboo in the conservative Islamic country where local authorities regulate the sex toy industry with colonial-era laws.

The prohibitions have forced importers, exporters, or local suppliers of sex toys, to rely on online sales within the country, where business is now booming.

A Karachi-based sex toy supplier said: “This industry is so huge that you can pay off a year’s worth of debt from your profit.

"It is like bitcoin or cryptocurrency."

The business man claimed he receives more than 100 local orders a month suggesting his earnings are up to 10 times the average monthly income in Pakistan.

He added: “There is a problem in selling locally. Due to Pakistan's internet policies we aren't allowed to post ads on Google or Facebook."
