Teen murdered mum by shooting her in head as she slept after she took his phone

A teenager has confessed to killing his mother by shooting her point-blank in the head after an argument over her confiscating his mobile phone.

On the night of 20 April 2020, Shawn Willis, 18, from Anderson County, Tennessee sneaked into the bedroom of his mum Sandy Willis while she was sleeping, and took a handgun from her bedside table.

He then went downstairs to load the weapon so as to avoid being heard, before quickly returning to the floor above and re-entering Sandy's room.

Willis then stood over his sleeping mother and fired two bullets straight into her head at close range.

He is being charged as an adult after newly released juvenile court records show he admitted to committing the murder, telling investigators that he was cross with her for confiscating his mobile phone as a punishment earlier that day.

Both he and his father were being interviewed at the time. He was just 16 at the time the crime took place.

"The proof will show that this defendant was angry with his mother, Sandy Willis, for punishing him by taking his cell phone away from him," court records read.

"(Willis) later called his girlfriend to report his mother was in the bed with blood on her."

"(Willis’s) girlfriend’s father arrived at the home and checked on (Sandy Willis), finding her deceased. (Willis) gave numerous conflicting stories as to what had happened, but weeks after the incident, he was interviewed by the detective in this case, where this defendant did admit to shooting his mother in the head as she slept."

The 18-year-old is being held in jail in Rocky Top, Tennessee with a bond of $1,000,000 (£730,205.00). A pretrial hearing is scheduled for 3 December.

There have been a number of cases of children murdering their parents over having their phone privileges taken away over the years.

In 2019, police said that 32-year-old Erica Hall of Magnolia, Mississippi was murdered by her two children, aged 14 and 12 after she had taken their mobile phones away.

She was found to have been stabbed multiple times and shot once in the chest.
