A homeless thug tried strangling a disabled man who kindly gave him a place to stay.

In a booze-fuelled fit of rage Andrew Wilson, 27, smashed a bottle of Lambrini over his victim's head and with a meat cleaver in hand, screamed "I'm going to f***ing kill you".

Derby Crown Court heard how the generous man's carer watched Wilson launch the brutal attack him before turning on her partner who tried stopping him.

The attack which involved throwing ornaments, a bottle and several punches at the victim, landed Wilson 16 months in prison.

DerbyshireLive reports that the 27-year-old had 16 previous convictions for 19 offences.

Judge Jonathan Bennett said: "The background to this is that the victim is disabled and has a carer at his address.

"He had been fairly good to you allowing you to stay and you repaid that by assaulting him in the way that you did."

The judge went on: "He was vulnerable, you used a number of weapons and there was an element of strangulation towards the end of the incident.

"It was not just one punch, there were a number of blows."

Stefan Fox, prosecuting, said the attack took place at the victim's home in Longstone Rise, Belper, in the early hours of January 9, this year.

He said Wilson had been staying there for three months after contacting the victim, saying he had split up from his partner and had nowhere to live.

Mr Fox said the defendant had been drinking and an argument erupted in the living room of the property.

He said: "He was volatile and aggressive, throwing ornaments and glass at the victim, one of which hit him on the head.

"The carer then saw him pick up a Lambrini bottle and smash it over the victim's head."

Fox added: "The defendant then went into the kitchen where the carer and her partner shouted at him to stop but he picked up a meat cleaver.

"He went back into the living room shouting 'I am going to f****** kill you,' but then returned to the kitchen where he punched the carer's partner to the face. He then picked up a chair and pushed the victim back using it, before starting to strangle him."

Mr Fox said the situation then calmed, the defendant left and the police were called.

Wilson, currently of Belmont Drive, Staveley, Chesterfield, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

As well as the jail term, Judge Bennett handed Wilson a five-year restraining order not to contact the victim, his carer, his carer's partner, or go to Longstone Rise, in Belper.
