A 37-year-old man who has never had sex in his life, inserted a two-metre-long piece of nylon string into his penis with the aim of maximising his erection.
The unnamed patient in Indonesia inserted the string while being fully erect and watching a pornographic video.
According to a team of researchers in the Asian country, patients who insert objects into their urethra are slow at getting treatment which can lead to serious complications, including recurrent urinary tract infection, stone formation and urosepsis.
The researchers believe that some people insert objects into their penis due to psychiatric issues with the aim of achieving sexual pleasure.
The challenge of dealing with these cases, they wrote, is increased thanks to dishonest patients who hinder proper diagnosis and management by not telling doctors what they had done to themselves.
The man in this case was admitted to a hospital’s emergency room with a chief complaint of lower abdominal pain.
They said communicating with the patient was challenging due to embarrassment and a history of speech difficulties.
The patient admitted that this was the first time that he had done this, although he masturbated and consumed pornographic content daily.

The researchers added: “The patient is not married with no history of sexual intercourse. He lived alone with his mother, who was suffering from a mental disorder.
“The general and hemodynamic condition of the patient was stable. Physical examination showed suprapubic pain and tenderness.”
The string was eventually recovered using grasping forceps and after a few days, a full recovery took place.
He was also referred to the psychiatric department's outpatient unit for further evaluation regarding his sexual behaviour and was assessed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, with predominant obsessive tendencies and paraphilia.
