Vladimir Putin’s double agents may ‘have infiltrated CIA and FBI’, says ex-spook

Vladimir Putin’s spies have “almost certainly” infiltrated American intelligence agencies, a host of former FBI agents and CIA officers have claimed.

And as the war in Ukraine continues to plateau for the desperate despot, experts fear the information could be more valuable and critical than ever.

The disturbing claims were made by a series of ex-spooks in a new book about infamous American spy Robert Hanssen, who is currently serving 15 life sentences.

From 1979 until his arrest in 2001, Hanssen worked as a spy for both the US and Russia and sold many secrets to Russia – including America’s nuclear defence strategy.

Now his duplicity has become the focus of a new book by former federal prosecutor Lis Wiehl, titled: “A Spy In Plain Sight.”

And chillingly Ms Weihl told the Sun that everyone she spoke to while writing her book suggested there were probably multiple new Hanssens in America today.

She said: “We have to be very aware that this could happen again.

“It was shocking to me when I did my interviews and asked the FBI agents and CIA officers.

“Every interview I ended with, ‘Could there be another Hanssen today?’ and, to a person, a hundred percent, the response was yes.

“And the follow up with many of them was that there probably already is.”

And in one interview contained in the book with former FBI Special Agent Jack Thompson, she was told he had “no reason to believe there isn’t a recruitment in place right now in the FBI, the CIA, and the DOE.”

He continued: “I can say almost with certainty that people in the DOE have been recruited by foreign intelligence services.”

And most chillingly of all, Ms Weihl surmised that as a former KGB agent, Putin would know all to well the benefits of having an ear in American affairs.

She said: "We can't be lackadaisical, we have to keep putting pressure on the institutions that are supposed to protect us like the FBI and the CIA to monitor their own.

"The information they have at the top level is absolutely critical to the wellbeing of all of us."
