Witnesses at water park where girl, 11, drowned blast staff ‘a complete joke’

Witnesses at a water park where an 11-year-old girl tragically died after she went missing on a giant inflatable assault course have branded the staff a "complete joke".

Witnesses said that staff at the Berkshire-based Liquid Leisure park were an utter shambles and that they "were not prepared" for the situation.

The fun is said to have turned to complete chaos after the mother of one child started screaming her name, with witnesses alleging there was a lack of an emergency plan with the young lifeguards at the water park.

Parents of the girl were prompted into a search after she hadn't returned from an inflatable session with ten friends at 3:40pm.

Some of the children at the park suggested that the girl couldn't swim and that she was last seen "going underwater", which sparked some panic.

Lifeguards sprinted around and asked visitors for goggles as they are said to have had no diving equipment to search under inflatables.

Emergency services were called at 3:55pm, while one mother alleged that it took 20 minutes for staff to clear the lake.

Adults then started to dive into the waters in the hopes of finding Kyra, who was found at 5:10pm and taken to Wexham Park Hospital, with the youngster sadly dying.

Police are investigating the death which is being treated as unexplained, while witnesses have slammed the teenage lifeguards and the "monstrosity" at Liquid Leisure.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, James Bull, 25, was one visitor who attempted to find Kyra, and said: "It was a complete shambles. I saw the lady shouting for (the girl), then I bumped into a couple of young girls who said they were (the girl's) friends."

He added that more adults and parents were in the water looking for her than lifeguards, branding the situation "a complete joke".

Another visitor, a 32-year-old mum of two speaking to Daily Mail, said: "There didn't seem to be a single adult in charge. It was horrendous. One of the lifeguards said he didn't want to get in because he didn't want to get his trainers wet.

"I can't begin to tell you how poorly dealt with it was. As a mum, seeing that, you just can't even begin to imagine what she was going through. It was so horrendous. I am just honestly so angry. There didn't seem to be an emergency plan."

In a statement, Liquid Leisure said they would be assisting police and added: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and all those affected by this desperately tragic and upsetting incident."
