The "best friend" of child killer Lucy Letby has claimed the murderous nurse is innocent of her shocking crime spree.

Janet Cox, who worked alongside the 33-year-old at the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit, claimed Letby had not murdered the seven youngsters, nor harmed six more.

Ms Cox says she will stand by her convicted pal following the 14 whole-life orders handed to Letby for her disgusting crimes.

The killer nurse had injected youngsters with air and poisoned them with insulin, a court found, but Janet Cox maintains her friend is innocent and gave a blunt reply without elaborating further.

Speaking briefly from her semi-detached home in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, Ms Cox was asked by the Daily Mail whether she believed her friend was innocent.

She answered "yes" but did not elaborate any further.

Mrs Cox was seen at Letby's trial at Manchester Crown Court sat beside the killer's parents, John, 77, and Susan, 63, and had offered comfort to the killer when she was found guilty of the first of seven murders.

On the first guilty verdict, Letby's pal had comforted her and left court crying, saying: "This cannot be right."

The Telegraph had previously reported Janet and Letby were "best friends", with a man at Ms Cox's property detailing their friendship.

Janet's defence of Letby comes as colleagues of the child killer detail their own horror in realising their workmate had been conducting a series of grim murders on vulnerable babies.

One unnamed nurse, speaking to The Times, said: "For a long time I just couldn’t understand how I hadn’t noticed what was going on right under my nose.

"But then I had a realisation that serial killers are very good at what they do – they are good at hoodwinking people and getting away with it, that’s why they are able to go on killing."

Letby became one of four women to be given whole life orders in UK legal history, meaning she will never be released from prison.

She follows in the footsteps of killers Rose West, Myra Hindley and Joanna Dennehy.
