A Ukrainian commander, Roman Kostenko, is calling on President Volodymyr Zelensky to assist Alexander Garms-Rizzi, a British soldier sentenced to a year in jail for leaving his unit to fight in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Garms-Rizzi, 21, left his regiment in Estonia to join Ukraine’s foreign legion and spent six months on the frontline near Mykolaiv. In July, he became the first British soldier imprisoned for desertion due to alleged security concerns.<\/p>\n
Commander Kostenko, who led Garms-Rizzi during his service, has asked Zelensky to help.<\/p>\n

More info<\/p>\n The letter added: \u201cI had the opportunity to meet him personally on the battlefield and watch how he, as part of a group, selflessly and bravely defended our lands. Despite his young age, and at that time he was 19 years old, he understood the strategic importance of defending Ukraine.<\/p>\n \u201cI ask you to appeal to the leadership of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with a request to consider the possibility of a pardon.\u201d<\/p>\n Garms-Rizzi is currently in a UK military detention centre. President Zelensky’s involvement could impact UK-Ukraine relations, as he joined the fight during a period of UK support for Britons in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
