Two Denver sheriff\u2019s deputies will be suspended for 10 days for not stopping assaults on two inmates in the showers at the Denver County Jail in September 2022.<\/p>\n
Deputies Alana Majors and Samone Walker violated the department\u2019s rules on \u201cFull Attention to Duties\u201d when they failed to see two inmates being attacked in the showers on surveillance video, according to decision letters issued by the Denver Department of Public Safety in August.<\/p>\n
Majors and Walker were tasked with watching video feeds of the facility and conducting regular rounds as part of their duties.<\/p>\n
Majors and Walker both told city officials they did not see any altercation among inmates during the time of the assaults.<\/p>\n
Descriptions of facility surveillance video detail how an inmate, PM, went to clean the showers just after 11 a.m. and was followed and attacked by other inmates. Six minutes later, an inmate identified as JH entered the showers and was also attacked.<\/p>\n
Surveillance video of the desk where Majors and Walker were watching video feeds showed the two facing each other and away from the monitors during the incident and talking with other deputies and glancing back at the video feeds, according to the decision letter.<\/p>\n
After the incident, PM reported to city officials that a deputy did rounds after the assaults, when JH\u2019s eye was split open and bleeding and PM had a black eye.<\/p>\n
The deputy saw their injuries and asked them if they were okay, PM said, but he did not feel like he could talk about the attacks in front of other inmates.<\/p>\n
Majors and Walker both maintained they were unaware of the attacks or any injuries and would have sent injured inmates to receive medical care.<\/p>\n
