Tensions at the summit were already high when Mr Zelensky took the stage just after 7pm GMT.<\/p>\n
He had earlier complained that the UN invite had been extended to Russian \u201cterrorists\u201d, adding that he was unsure how he would react when he was made to sit in a room with Lavrov during an upcoming security council meeting.<\/p>\n
During his speech, deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyansky sat in Russia\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n
During US President Joe Biden\u2019s earlier speech, in which he rallied for continued Ukrainian support, Polyansky spent much of it staring at his phone.<\/p>\n

More info<\/p>\n Mr Zelensky said in his address that Russia was \u201cweaponising\u201d everything from food and energy to abducted children in its war against Ukraine, and he warned world leaders that the same could happen to them.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen hatred is weaponised against one nation, it never stops there,” he said. \u201cThe goal of the present war against Ukraine is to turn our land, our people, our lives, our resources into weapons against you \u2014 against the international rules-based order.\u201d<\/p>\n He pointed to the war’s effect on fuel and food supplies, and he highlighted what Ukraine says were at least tens of thousands of children taken from their families after Moscow’s invasion: \u201cWhat will happen to them?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThose children in Russia are taught to hate Ukraine, and all ties with their families are broken. And this is clearly a genocide,\u201d Mr Zelensky said.<\/p>\n Perhaps most impressively, the Ukrainian President delivered the entire speech in English, a language that he could hardly understand, let alone speak, when Russia invaded last February.<\/p>\n It is believed he has since been taking lessons to better appeal to the Western world, an incredibly difficult task given his array of jobs as a wartime leader.<\/p>\n
