Russian secret services have learned of a plot from "within their own ranks" to take out Vladimir Putin, according to a Telegram channel with close links to the country's security forces.

The VChK-OGPU channel reports the assassination plot came to light in a meeting at karaoke club Honey, in Chekhov near Moscow. The club is said to be a known haunt of Russian agents.

The channel cited an informant – named as construction entrepreneur Mikhail Yurchenko, 37 – as saying an "agent" at the club had boasted about being given the "task" to "remove" Putin.

Yurchenko claimed he and the agent had a "long heart-to-heart" about the Ukraine war and Russia's future, and that the agent showed him his service ID card. "Haunted" by what he was told about the plot, Yurchenko is said to have reported it to the police. And now authorities are investigating the claims.

VChK-OGPU reports: "The special services have been searching for several days for the unknown person who planned to 'remove' Putin. Based on his tip, operatives went to study the situation in the Honey club, where… you can often meet employees of various [secret] departments."

Putin is said to be extremely paranoid about security in general. His travel routes change frequently to keep him safe. It comes ahead of the dictator's birthday on Saturday (October 7) when he'll be turning 71.

In recent weeks Putin has been seen at more public appearances than usual, making a number of speeches justifying the war in Ukraine and criticising Ukraine's western allies. It is thought that soon he'll announce he is seeking re-election ahead of a vote in March next year.
