A police officer has allegedly killed two Israeli nationals and injured "many more" in a shooting in Alexandria, Egypt.

The officer is accused of opening fire on a bus full of tourists from the besieged nation today (Sunday, October 8). A security source told Cairo News Channel the holidaymakers were killed close to the Umd al-Sawari shrine and that the cop was responsible for securing the area at the time.

News outlet Visegrad 24 took to X (formerly Twitter) following the incident, writing: "Terror attack against Israel tourists in Alexandria, Egypt. The suspected shooter has since been arrested and is being held in custody. The site of the reported attack has also been cordoned off.

The reported shooting comes just a day after a surprise attack on Israel by the terrorist group Hamas. Thousands of rockets were launched from Gaza in the assault, which has killed at least 350 Israelis and injured about 3,200, according to local reports.

Gunmen also stormed the country via Gaza after bulldozing a section of metal fencing separating the two countries. Hamas claims to have taken a number of hostages, both civilian and IDF (Israel Defence Forces) fighters.

The group's military chief, Mohammed Deif, said: "This is the day of the greatest battle to end the last occupation on earth."

Retaliating, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned a "long and difficult war" was ahead after he vowed to take revenge on Hamas. "I tell Hamas, you are responsible for the wellbeing of captives, Israel will settle the score with anyone who harms them," he said.

"What happened today has never been seen in Israel, we will take mighty vengeance for this black day." He also threatened to turn the terror group's hideouts "into rubble" and warned innocent Palestinians living near Gaza to "get out of there now".
