A senior Tory peer and prominent Jew has called out Gary Lineker for his silence on the brutal attacks from Israel.

Lord Wolfson, a leading KC and former minister, is one of a number of senior lawyers who has written to the broadcast watchdog Ofcom complaining about the BBC’s skewed coverage of the attacks on Israel.

The Corporation has refused to use the accurate word “terrorist” to describe Hamas but instead has insisted on calling them “militants” or “fighters”.

In an interview with Jacob Rees-Mogg on GB News, the peer turned on celebrities who “normally Tweet about everything” but have been silent as more than 1,200 innocent Israeli citizens have been killed.

In particular he took aim at Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker who recently likened the British government to Nazis.

He drew a lot of publicity when he compared the government’s immigration policy to 1930s Germany.

“Well what happened to Israel on Saturday was 1940s Germany.

“More Jews were killed deliberately on Saturday than on any day since the Holocaust.”

Don’t miss… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Mr Lineker actually applauded a post by the Premier League saying it would have a minute’s silence for those who lost their lives in the conflict.

However, there has also been criticism of the Premier League for not showing solidarity with Israel specifically even after its government was forced to publish pictures of murdered babies and children who had been burnt alive to prove Hamas’s crimes.

There has also been anger over the FA’s refusal to light Wembley Arch in the colours of the Israeli flag as an act of solidarity as it did with Ukraine.

Parliament and Downing Street were lit in the Israeli flag colours earlier in the week and the government has flown the Israeli flag from its buildings.

Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Lucy Frazer has said she will take up the issue with the FA.

She said: “I am extremely disappointed by the FA’s decision not to light up the Wembley Stadium arch following last weekend’s horrific terrorist attacks in Israel, and have made my views clear to the FA.

“It is especially disappointing in light of the FA’s bold stance on other terrorist attacks in the recent past. Words and actions matter. The Government is clear: we stand with Israel.”
