Rishi Sunak faces a tense wait to see if the Tories have managed to hold on to Mid Bedfordshire and Tamworth after polls closed in the crunch by-elections.

The results from the two contests are expected in the early hours of Friday.

The seats were won comfortably by the Conservatives at the 2019 general election and will need large shifts to change hands to Labour or the Lib Dems.

The Mid Bedfordshire contest was sparked by former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries quitting after she was not given a peerage in former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list.

Meanwhile, the Tamworth ballot comes after Chris Pincher stepped down over groping allegations.
