A pub chain that runs a bunch of play areas alongside its family boozers has had to impose a ban on the sale of certain drinks following mysterious “recent incidents”.

A sign has gone up at one of the Wacky Warehouse sites in Wigan, telling punters they can no longer buy cocktails or down shots there, reports the Manchester Evening News. The sign at the venue, which adjoins the Red Robin pub, is entitled “Recent restrictions” and reads: “Cocktails & shots will no longer be purchased or consumed within the Wacky Warehouse (due to recent incidents).”

Given that the venue is designed for kids aged up to 12, it seems a somewhat odd policy to have to enforce – but visitors are being left in no doubt that they haven’t misread it, as the poster includes emojis of 10 brightly coloured cocktails, as well as a red warning symbol.

Greene King, the company behind Wacky Warehouse, said the ban had been put in place to “minimise disruption”, but it didn’t say what the recent disruption had been.

“We have recently decided to prohibit the consumption of certain drinks in this part of the venue in order to minimise disruption to other guests in the area,” said a spokesperson for the company.

“Cocktails and shots can be purchased and consumed as usual in our bar and restaurant area.”

The nature of the sign, which appears to have been put together on a computer and doesn’t have any formal Wacky Warehouse or Greene King branding, suggests it was a decision made by a local manager and is not a company-wide policy.

According to the Wacky Warehouse website, it’s the “nation’s biggest soft play area provider”.

It adds: “Wacky Warehouse is a household name for soft play and indoor entertainment with over 70 venues nationwide.
