Soldiers try to escape burning Russian trench

Reports from Kyiv indicate that Moscow’s attempts to enlist troops from occupied Crimea for the Ukraine war have failed. Russian forces have suffered significant losses, particularly after their recent Avdiivka offensive.

The National Resistance Center of Ukraine, created by Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, reported that Russian efforts to conscript soldiers from Crimea have been thwarted. Residents are leaving the peninsula to avoid conscription, leaving Moscow’s recruitment plan unfulfilled.

The Ukrainian centre labels Russia’s mobilisation in the occupied territory as an “international crime,” pledging accountability for those responsible and urging residents to report collaboration with the enemy.

Before the 2022 invasion, Russia was already conscripting men from Crimea in violation of international law.

In another development, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggests that Russian military authorities coerced Ukrainian prisoners of war into fighting for Moscow in Ukraine, potentially violating the Geneva Conventions.

The US accuses Russia of executing disobedient soldiers and threatening units with death for retreating. White House spokesperson John Kirby called these actions “reprehensible.”

Former Wagner mercenaries in Chechen units

ormer members of the Wagner Group, the private military company, have joined the Akhmat Battalion from Chechnya, which is involved in the conflict in Ukraine. This was revealed by the commander of the Akhmat Battalion, Apti Alaudinov, in an interview, as reported by the Kyiv Independent. According to Alaudinov, “many Wagner soldiers have joined various detachments of the Akhmat forces and are operating in undisclosed sectors of the Ukrainian front.” He added that “Wagner fighters have always spoken with great respect for Akhmat,” possibly as an attempt to ease tensions between the late financier of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, and the head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov. According to the Institute for the Study of War, the former fragmented Wagner forces in various front sectors are unlikely to regain their status as an effective military organisation, as they no longer possess the strength that comes from being a unified organisation under clear and consistent leadership.

Lukashenko calls for peace talks and end of war

From Minsk comes the plea to finally halt the war in Ukraine and initiate substantive negotiations. In the Ukraine conflict, there are “many issues” on both sides, and the situation is essentially deadlocked: no one can make significant headway to strengthen their position, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said, according to the state news agency BelTA. “We need to sit down at the negotiation table and reach an agreement,” Lukashenko added in a question-and-answer video posted on the website of the Belarusian state news agency BelTA. Lukashenko is Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest ally, and Russian troops attacked Ukraine from Belarusian territory in February 2022.

During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Minsk yesterday, President Lukashenko announced his intention to have a phone conversation with the President of Russia soon, as reported by BelTA.
