Hamas fighters stormed out of a tunnel complex in northern Gaza attempting to ambush Israeli soldiers operating in the area, according to new reports.

Sunday afternoon, Palestinian fighters reportedly came out of a tunnel in Gaza a few hundred meters from the border with Israel near the Erez Crossing, Army Radio reported in Israel.

The report stated that a number of the gunmen were killed in the clashes while mortars were fired setting off sirens in Netiv Ha’asara. The IDF has not publically commented on the incident.

The news comes as Israeli forces spent a second night in the northern Gaza Strip significantly expanding ground operations there, according to the military.

The IDF said Israeli fighter jets had struck more than 450 targets in Gaza over the past 24 hours while an IDF officer was “severely injured” after being hit by a mortar in northern Gaza.

Unlike previous incursions, Israeli forces have not pulled back from Gaza after entering the strip and there have been reports of ongoing battles involving tanks, infantry and air support in the north of the strip.

One of the number one goals of the IDF is likely to neutralise Hamas’s huge underground tunnel network that can be used to move troops and equipment around Gaza. Israel also said its forces had hit Palestinian militants preparing anti-tank missile launches.

The intense fighting has sparked fears that the conflict could quickly spread to other areas of the Middle East.

This morning, Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi posted to X (formerly Twitter) warning that Israel had “crossed the red lines” and warned this could “force everyone to take action”.
