A singer has tragically died after being bitten in the face by a spider.

Prior to his death, Darlyn Morais from Brazil shared a gruesome image on social media showing blackened bite marks on his cheek.

He was nipped by the venomous spider at his home in Miranorte, in the northeast of Brazil, on October 31. Speaking to Brazilian news outlet G1, Morais' wife Jhullyenny Lisboa said her husband became fatigued before suffering allergic reactions later in the week.

Morais' condition worsened and he visited a hospital in Miranorte. He was treated and discharged on November 3, but his wife said he was admitted to hospital again on November 5. He tragically passed away on Monday (November 6).

Lisboa told G1 that Morais' 18-year-old stepdaughter also suffered a spider bite. She is currently in hospital in a stable condition.

Morais reportedly started making music at the age of 15. His three-man band, which included his brother, performed forró music – a genre of tunes popular in northeast Brazil.

His cousin, Wesleya Silva, told G1: "He was always surrounded by friends and it was always a reason to celebrate for him. Always very happy and smiling with everyone around him. Owner of a giant heart, always helping the people around him."

It is currently unclear what species of spider bit Morais. Brazil is home to the world's most dangerous spider – the Brazilian Wandering spider. Its bite has a number of gruesome side effects and can even leave blokes with erections that last for hours.

The venom causes extraordinary pain, increased blood pressure, a racing respiratory rate, blurred vision and convulsions. Its unique ability to simulate arousal has led to scientific studies into its potential use in combating erectile dysfunction.
