A motoring expert has revealed how petrol and diesel owners can save 10 percent on their fuel costs with a simple change.

The unique tip should allow road users to keep more than one hundred pounds in their pockets every year.

John Woosey, founder of Ripe Motorhome Insurance, has warned that a simple change to motorists’ driving style will have major benefits.

Instead of driving at 70mph, road users have been told to slow things down by around 5-15mph.

Cruising along at this speed is considered the “sweet spot” as road users will not be touching their brakes regularly.

Over the course of a year, experts claim the simple hack could save a staggering £136.40.

Mr Woosey explained: “Try to avoid harsh braking and acceleration – instead, cruise at a speed of around 55-65mph when on the motorway.

“This is the economical ‘sweet spot’ for most cars and can save around 9-10 percent in fuel consumption.”

According to the RAC, keeping a car moving at the right speed is “essential” for maintaining fuel economy.

They warn that slowing down and then accelerating again will use up more fuel as the car has to work harder.

Instead, looking ahead and anticipating the road to keep momentum was one of the most important ways to cut down on costs.

They commented: “The best advice is to drive as smoothly as possible, gently using the steering, accelerator and brakes.

“When slowing down, it’s important to remain in gear as the fuel cut-off switch in a fuel injection engine is then activated, meaning virtually no fuel is used while braking.

“Try to anticipate what’s going to happen in front of you by looking well ahead. This way you’ll see the traffic lights on red meaning you can ease back on the accelerator or slow down naturally and potentially keep moving as opposed to coming to a stop.”
