New weather maps are showing evidence of a super storm sweeping across the US this Thanksgiving, bringing snow and causing travel chaos for the 55 million Americans expected to be travelling for the holidays.

Thanksgiving is next week and meteorologists have found evidence of a subborn storm system that, after sitting off the Pacific coast for a couple of days, is expected to move eastward across the country during the first half of the upcoming holiday week.

While previously it was expected that just the northeast of the country would be hit with storms over Thanksgiving, it is now being suggested that the whole country will be affected by extreme weather including snow.

The coasts are set to experience wetter weather over the weekend weekend, with both the Interstate 95 and 5 corridors affected by rain.

The Green and White Mountains, and the Sierra are predicted to experience snow on Sunday, as well as severe storms in Dallas and Oklahoma City.

The above map shows the weather prediction for Sunday, four days before Thanksgiving.

The green shadings depict where rain is expected, the blue areas are expected to see snow, purple locations may see either rain or snow, and areas in pink are expected to see sleet or ice.

It shows that not just the east coast will be hit with severe weather, as was originally predicted, but areas in the south and west will also experience it.

Houston and Omaha will be largely hit with rain, and Seattle and Salt Lake City can expect to see a combination of rain and snow.

Moving into next week, central and eastern US could see widespread rain and harsh winds beginning Monday and lasting until Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.

On Monday, the area threatened to be hit with severe storms will shift east from central Louisiana to southern Alabama, including Baton Rouge and Hattiesburg.

As the map above shows, huge areas of the northeast are expected to be covered by snow on the eve of Thanksgiving.

The eastern two-thirds of the country will likely be hit with cold air on Wednesday and during Thanksgiving on Thursday.

Be sure to check your travel plans before visiting home for the holidays, if you’re one of the 55 million Americans expected to be doing so.
