It could be about to get very cold with the extreme weather that’s hit the UK recently set to bring us plunging temperatures.

The country has been battered by storms over the past few weeks, and much of the UK has seen wet and windy weather again this weekend – some places saw a week's worth of rain overnight last night.

But as if we haven't had enough of it all, next up could be what the experts call a northerly “toppler” cold snap, and that could see temperatures plunging and snow falling.

The weird weather today could bring gales of up to 50mph in some parts of the country, particularly in Wales. And although the middle of the week could see it warm up a bit, don’t expect it to last.

Temperatures in Scotland could drop as low as -4C next weekend, while it could also be freezing in northern England. Further south it won’t be quite as cold but the rest of the country might struggle to get above 2C.

A “toppler” is when a northerly wind isn't around for long because high pressure comes in from the Atlantic and moves it on.

The Met Office said: "Friday and next weekend have a lot of uncertainty but we might see high pressure pulling further west allowing colder northerly winds to push southwards (temporarily), perhaps bringing a risk of wintry showers (snow showers for Scotland) and night frost.”

Maps from WX Charts indicate that we might get some of the white stuff in early December. A huge weather system covering the whole country could bring both heavy rain and heavy snow.

The Midlands and the north of England could get snow falling at the rate of 2cm an hour, while the Scottish Highlands, East Anglia and the southeast of England might also get some.

The Met Office, meanwhile, says the start of December will be “changeable”, with rain and strong winds interspersed by short-lived drier, brighter periods.
