Geert Wilders, often dubbed the Dutch Donald Trump, is poised for a resounding victory in the Dutch parliamentary elections, marking one of the most significant political upsets in the country since World War II.

The election results, if confirmed, could potentially make Wilders the Netherlands’ first hard-right prime minister, introducing a new era of political dynamics in the heart of Europe.

The international response to Wilders’ victory has been mixed, with various figures expressing their perspectives on social media platforms.

Italian MEP Marco Zanni attributed Wilders’ success to a rejection of the European Union and its policies.

Zanni pointed out that in one of the traditionally pro-European countries, voters rejected established parties and figures associated with the EU, opting instead for a platform centred around criticism of the EU, the protection of national identity, and a strong stance against Islamic fundamentalism.

X user Jay in Kyiv, associated with the Prytula Foundation, expressed concerns about Wilders’ relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Don’t miss… According to Jay, Wilders, whom he labelled as “Putin’s buddy,” is expected to steer the Netherlands toward an anti-EU stance in line with Putin’s interests.

He wrote: “Putin’s buddy, Wilders will now spend the next few years trying to pull Netherlands out of the EU and whatever else Putin tells him to do.”

Renowned Remainer author A C Grayling took to social media to emphasize the growing influence of far-right movements globally. Mentioning recent political developments in Argentina and the UK, Grayling urged vigilance, highlighting leaders such as Trump, UK Tories, Wilders, and others in what he called the “roll of dishonour.”

He said: “There’s a big problem, friends. The far-right are on the march in too many places. It is seriously time to get real about this. This week: Argentina. Netherlands. The roll of dishonour: Trump, UK Tories, Urban, Modi, Wilders, Le Pen, Milei, Bolsonaro, Meloni, Erdogan…”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, in response to Wilders’ victory, issued a stark warning to progressives worldwide. Khan stressed the urgency of addressing the rising threat posed by far-right ideologies, urging a united front to defend shared values against the growing influence of populist leaders.

Khan wrote on X: “A reminder to progressives everywhere – the continued threat of the far-right is real and on our doorstep. The next year is going to be pivotal for standing up for and defending our values – in London, in Europe and across the world.”
