PMQs: James Cleverly appears to gesture at Keir Starmer

James Cleverly made a Pinocchio gesture at Sir Keir Starmer after an attack during a fiery PMQs.

The Labour leader brought up accusations the Home Secretary called Labour MP Alex Cunningham’s Stockton North constituency a “s***hole” in a heated Commons moment last week as he hit out at Rishi Sunak over immigration.

Mr Cleverly, who admitted he called Mr Cunningham a “s*** MP” but denied insulting the northern town, responded by pointing to Sir Keir and then signalling a long nose.

The gesture came after the Labour leader said: “There’s only one party that’s lost control of the borders and they’re sitting right there.

“This is a government not just in turmoil, in open revolt. The immigration minister thinks the Prime Minister is failing because apparently, nobody will listen to his secret plan.

“The former home secretary thinks he’s failing because of his magical thinking.

“The current Home Secretary thinks he’s failing. He even took time out of his busy schedule to insult people in the North East to admit he agreed with Labour.

“The Prime Minister seems to be the only person on the Tory benches without his own personal immigration plan.

“Clearly his own side doesn’t have any faith in him, why should the public.”

Mr Cleverly later angrily shouted at Sir Keir after he again raised the row over whether he called Stockton North a “s***hole”.

Referring to the diplomatic spat with Greece over the treasures, the Labour leader said: “It is ironic that he has suddenly taken such a keen interest in Greek culture when he has clearly become the man with the reverse Midas touch.

“Everything he touches turns to – maybe the Home Secretary can help me out here?”

Mr Cleverly heckled Sir Keir but it was not clear what he said in his tirade.
