An automotive influencer has opened up about a frustrating experience she has had whilst driving an electric car.

Niya Esperanza regularly posts to her TikTok channel, sometimes discussing what life is like an as electric car owner.

Whilst the overall experience has been positive for her, in one video Niya discusses running out of charge whilst driving home.

She explained: “Okay, so I drove really far away, and I got in the car, and I was like ‘I don’t have enough charge to get home’. I knew where a charger was, but it was like four miles the other way.

“So, I drove to those chargers four miles away, so that meant I was significantly further from my house, and none of the chargers were working. The app had said that they were, but some were being used, some weren’t working, it just was all a mess.”

Fortunately, Niya noted that there were other public EV chargers on her journey home, however getting to them increased her range anxiety.

She continued: “So, I looked up another one and I knew there was one between where I was and home that was going to be close, but I should have enough charge to get there. So, I drove to that one, pulled up with three percent [charge] left in my car, all of them were being used, and it looked like they had all just started being used.

“I was like ‘okay, I think if I take the streets, I could make it to the one by my house’. So, I’m driving down the street, three quarters of a mile away from the charger I need to be at. The car is at one percent, I can see it [the charger], but all of a sudden, no power. But by some sweet grace of God I rolled, so slowly, all the way down the street.”

As more motorists make the switch from petrol-power to electric, public chargers are busier than ever before.

The charging equipment company DriveElectric has asked EV owners to be considerate to others by moving away from the charger once they have finished.

The company also advised drivers to charge at off-peak times where possible, in order to avoid needing to queue for long times.
