<\/p>\nA gorgeous tropical island is an up-and-coming travel destination for Brits wanting some winter sun \u2013 but you might never have heard of it. According to a recent study, almost a fifth of Brits wish they could escape the UK winters for several weeks in the sunshine and you could do just that at Saint Martin Island.<\/p>\n
The stunning island, part of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea, reaches a balmy 28C on average each winter. Google Search stats show it\u2019s growing in popularity too as it\u2019s been looked up 2,174,580 times \u2013 and it\u2019s easy to see why.<\/p>\n
Saint Martin Island is east of Puerto Rico and boasts busy resort beaches, secluded but beautiful coves, golden sand and seawater that\u2019s so turquoise it doesn\u2019t seem real. But, it\u2019s not just the natural beauty that tempts holidaymakers to the island. The capital city, Marigot, once a small fishing village is now full of bistros and cafes as well as pretty, colourful buildings to admire.<\/p>\n
The town also has booming markets, attractive promenades and plenty of shopping for those who like retail therapy. The sprawling Marigot market sells fresh fruit, vegetables, spices and traditional dishes like Colombo (a curried fish stew).<\/p>\n
You can also purchase sweet local rums, buy gifts and souvenirs or splash the cash on luxury brands around the town on its beautifully arranged shopping streets.<\/p>\n

History buffs will be able to explore a number of important spots including Fort Louis which was built to defend the town from pirates during its time exporting rum, salt, sugar cane and coffee. The island was a part of the slave trade and this is demonstrated in its sights, museums and exhibitions.<\/p>\n
You can also visit the island's original prison which was transformed into a fire station in 1968. Alternatively, you can get stuck into Spring Sugar Mill, the Hope Estate Archaeological Site and the National Nature Reserve of Saint Martin.<\/p>\n
