<\/p>\nA British grandfather was left \u201cgargling\u201d down the phone to his family as he was strangled in a Dubai jail.<\/p>\n
The family of Albert Douglas, 61, have revealed that he had had more time added to his prison sentence despite claiming to be innocent. He is understood to be lucky to be alive after a crazed inmate tied a phone cord around his neck.<\/p>\n
He is in Al Barsha prison following his arrest in 2021 and had been trying to call his family when he was attacked from behind. He used to live in the emirate\u2019s luxurious Palm Islands with \u201ctens of millions in the bank\u201d but was arrested after his son\u2019s flooring company amassed debts it couldn\u2019t afford to pay. He was ordered to pay \u00a32.5million despite reportedly having no association with the company.<\/p>\n

When he was strangled in October, operators thought he was having a stroke and called his son Wolfgang Douglas, 36. Speaking to theSun<\/u>, Wolfgang said that his father\u2019s attacker had "tried their best to strangle him to death. They called me straight away and said they think he's having a stroke because he's gargling. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn't, he was being strangled to death. He is just a frail old man. He is totally and utterly finished now."<\/p>\n
Albert is understood to have managed to fend off his assailant but was taken to hospital shortly afterwards. It costs his son \u00a3130 to ring his father for 30 minutes \u2013 most inmates can't afford this luxury and so Albert\u2019s family suspect that others had become \u201cjealous\u201d of his frequent calls.<\/p>\n

Albert was first arrested over a cheque that bounced that he is understood to have not written. Forensic tests are understood to have proven that the cheque was not his, however, it has since been claimed that he was given other trumped-up charges which have since seen his stay in the cage extended by \u201cfive additional years,\u201d Wolfgang said.<\/p>\n
