The Prime Minister’s fate is now inextricably linked with the success or failure of the Rwanda deportation plan.

Centrists in the One Nation caucasus are unhappy about how hard the bill is, while five groups on the right believe it does not go far enough.

Both sides are so far apart on this issue and many others that some MPs seem more intent on destroying their Tory colleagues than their Labour opponents.

A small number of “ultras” on the right look back to the Brexit battlefields for inspiration on how they should approach the Rwanda row.

They believe that Britain’s departure from the EU without still being hitched to the bloc through a customs union or the single market was only achieved by being utterly hardline and refusing to compromise.

That one of their own prime ministers was brought down as a result was mere collateral damage. Some of them are prepared for a repeat of the scenario.

Westminster watchers once again have started to question if the Conservative party has become ungovernable.

Mr Sunak’s decision to address some factions directly enhanced their power and also emboldened members to be rebellious.

It is much more difficult to tell a prime minister you are going to defy them if you are the only MP in the room.

Grumblings about the whipping operation persist, with some MPs claiming clumsy attempts at persuasion have had the opposite effect.

The Prime Minister secured enough votes to ensure the Rwanda Safety Bill makes it to the next stage.

It was a critical vote that came close to being lost, but there is now potentially worse to come.

MPs will try and make changes in the next stages, which will bring fresh battles.

Once it hits the House of Lords, where the government does not have a majority, it faces a battering.

Mr Sunak must find a few bruisers who are able to engage in the rough and tumble needed to push the bill through if it has any chance of passing.
