Prince William is a "romantic at heart" and used to organise secret cinema and pub trips with Princess Kate, a former royal butler has revealed.

Grant Harrold worked as King Charles' personal butler between 2004 and 2011 and even attended Kate and William's wedding.

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, Harrold lifted the lid on the Waleses' relationship during that time. He even said he was once on hand to help William organise a special Valentine's Day treat for his missus.

Harrold said: "William is a romantic at heart. I remember him asking me to help with a candlelit dinner for Kate to celebrate Valentine’s Day. It was the Valentine's after they got engaged and shortly before their wedding. I was so happy to be involved. I can’t remember exactly what was served but I’m sure William chose Kate’s favourite dessert. He’s got a romantic side."

He also revealed how the Waleses were "down to Earth" and engaged in several everyday activities you might not expect from royals – such as pub trips.

Harrold continued: "I remember them ordering curries to the house and organising secret cinema trips. When they lived in Tetbury, I remember going to the local pub and Kate and William were just sitting in there having a drink. We had a nice chat. They were so normal and like any other couple. And the locals just left them alone."

Obviously mind, given their fame, there were some aspects that were different to the pub trips the rest of us enjoy. Harrold explained: "They wouldn’t have been able to drive as they were drinking so they’d usually have a plain clothed bodyguard sat a few tables away to give them privacy."

Recounting another instance where he spotted William out and about, he said: "I also remember bumping into William at a Tesco garage. He tapped me on the shoulder and I didn’t recognise him at first. He was wearing a helmet and he was on his motorbike and had to lift his visor so I could see his face."

For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletter by clicking here.
