Lord David Cameron “absolutely cannot be trusted” to deliver a proper Brexit because he “intends to align the UK with the EU”, a former MEP has warned. The Foreign Secretary, who spearheaded the campaign to Remain in the EU, appeared to make a major U-turn this week during an appearance at the Lords’ European Affairs Committee.

Lord Cameron admitted he was “impressed” with how the UK was diverging from the EU and making a success of its independence from the bloc by striking lucrative trade deals around the world. But former MEP and leading Brexiteer businessman Ben Habib claimed Lord Cameron did not care about the UK’s decision to leave the EU, describing both his and Rishi Sunak’s political appointments as an “affront to democracy”.

The deputy leader of Reform UK told Express.co.uk: “David Cameron absolutely cannot be trusted with ensuring the UK’s independence. He is giving himself a Brexiteer veneer, as thin as varnish, only to mislead.

“He fully intends to align the UK with the EU and altogether defeat the independence for which we voted. There are two people in high office both of whom were not elected to it.

Their appointments are an affront to democracy.

“They care not for it or the vote in 2016. Thankfully we, the people, will see to it that they are democratically ejected from office.”

Mr Habib’s intervention comes after Lord Cameron appeared before the European Affairs Committee this week in his first major grilling there since being made Foreign Secretary.

He told peers on Thursday: “If you leave the EU, the key thing is to take advantage of the new situation you’re in.

“We’re not in the customs union, we’re not in the single market, we’re making this partnership work.

“As part of that arrangement, we’re free to make these trade arrangements with the rest of the world.

“I’m delighted that we’re doing CPTPP. We’ll be one of the largest players in this new emerging bloc. We can help shape, develop and grow it. While currently, it’s a small percentage of our trade, these are some of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

“I think we can do that consistent with our obligations under the withdrawal agreement and we can make that work and that’s what we should be doing.

“There’s no point leaving and not taking advantage of leaving and that’s what we’re doing with things like that.”
