The insurance price comparison website Go.Compare has urged motorists not to speed over the festive period, revealing that Christmas Day is one of the worst times for speeding in the UK.
According to figures from the Department of Transport, during Christmas Day 2021, 91 percent of cars exceeded the limit in a 20mph zone, whilst 63 percent of vehicles were recorded speeding in 30mph zones.
Tom Banks, car insurance expert at Go.Compare, warned drivers planning on travelling during the day not to take advantage of the quieter roads.
He explained: “Some roads can be quieter on Christmas Day, which might make it tempting to put your foot down. However, it’s critical that you resist the urge and stick to the speed limits.
“Christmas is a special time of the year for all of us and nobody wants to spend it dealing with an accident. For this reason, you should be especially careful when on the road around Christmas.”

Go.Compare also highlighted that New Years day is also typically a bad day for speeding on 20mph roads, with 92 percent of motorists spotted exceeding the limit on January 1st 2021.
However, no matter the day, drivers found speeding can face a fine of at least £100 and three penalty points on their driving licence.
If the case is taken to court, the fine can increase to £1,000, or £2,500 if the incident occurred whilst travelling on a motorway.

Tom added that the rollout of 20mph zones across built up areas of Wales during 2023 could see more motorists face fines.
He continued: “It’s interesting that roads with lower limits tend to experience a higher percentage of speeding vehicles.
“However, while speeding is more common, other studies have shown that lowering the limits helped to reduce the average speeds of drivers overall. So, although their introduction has been controversial, they could bring noteworthy improvements in road safety.”
