The online car retailer Cinch and the colour psychologist Suzy Chiazzari have revealed what car colours say about the people who own them.
Many people like to see their car as an extension of their personality, spending thousands to make sure that the engine, styling, and colour is right for them.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, grey is the most popular colour for a new car, with Suzy stating that it is a colour chosen by those who are practical and pragmatic.
She explained: “Drivers of grey cars are more cautious and don’t necessarily want to stand out from the crowd. In fact, grey vehicles do the job just right, as they are practical and reliable in all weather conditions.
“They’re able to hide muddy stains well and prioritise functionality over showiness. In short, if you’re the proud owner of a grey model, you’re sober, rational, and pragmatic.”
For used cars, Cinch state that the majority of buyers search for black cars, which the company states is timeless and simple.
Similarly popular is white, which Suzy noted is best known for its purity, suggesting that owners of a vehicle this colour are organised and forward-thinking.
However, whilst white was the third-most popular colour for new cars during 2022, with 268,886 models sold in it, the colour is in decline, with sales dropping by 4.8 percent in 12 months.

Suzy noted that owners of red vehicles, another strong seller, are typically more assured than drivers of black, grey, or white cars, but still like to stay safe.
She added: “If you own a red vehicle, you’re bound to have quick reactions. You’re a confident motorist who isn’t afraid of being in everyone’s line of vision.
“You are dynamic, you thrive on adventures and strong emotion, and you have a rebellious spirit. That said, you understand the importance of being safe at the wheel.”

Cinch added that owners of yellow and orange cars also tend to be extroverts who enjoy driving and seeing new places when behind the wheel.
Additionally, whilst some believe that owning a green-coloured car is a symbol of bad luck, Suzy noted that the people who drive them are typically fuss-free.
She continued: “Someone who’s in control of a green vehicle is a trustworthy, well-balanced individual who knows exactly what they want in life.”
