David Cameron told pals he was ‘bored s***less’ as he planned to return to politics in an unearthed interview from 2018.
This morning the former Prime Minister was appointed Foreign Secretary, replacing James Cleverly who has replaced Suella Braverman as Home Secretary after she was fired from the role by PM Rishi Sunak earlier today.
Mr Cameron allegedly made the comments to friends in late 2018, just over two years after he resigned as Prime Minister after the Brexit vote.
Following on from his appointment as Foreign Secretary, Mr Cameron faces several key challenges including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza alongside managing tension with China.
A friend reportedly told the Sun that Mr Cameron was “bored s***less” and that if we were to return to the government it would be as Foreign Secretary.

They added: “David is dedicated to public service, and has often said he wouldn’t rule out a public role one day, domestically or internationally.”
Fast forward to 2023 and Mr Cameron has re-entered frontline politics. In a statement, No10 said: “The King has been pleased to approve the appointment of the Rt Hon David Cameron as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
“His Majesty has also been pleased to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom for life upon David Cameron.”
The reason why Mr Cameron has been able to take on the role of Foreign Secretary despite not being an MP is because he has now been made a member of the House of Lords.
Sky New’s Alastair Bruce explained: “A peerage can be granted by the King on advice of the prime minister.
“A patent of creation under the great seal can follow after a title is agreed. A Garter King of Arms ceremony of Introduction into the House of Lords, including the oath, can also be organised quite fast.”
Alongside becoming Foreign Secretary, Mr Cameron has also made history as he has become the first ever life peer to hold a Great Office of State.

While Mr Cameron could flourish in his new role, there are concerns about Rishi Sunak’s decision to bring him back into the fold.
Last month, Mr Cameron criticised the decision to cancel the Manchester branch of HS2.
In a statement at the time, he said: “In years to come I suspect many will look back at today’s announcement and wonder how this once-in-a-generation opportunity was lost.”
